RIQ

 Riq, rik (arab. رق) is a type of tambourine used in both folk and classical Arabic music. The frame of the riq is made of wood, like apricot or lemon, it can be decorated and it usually is 20 cm wide. We can also find riqs with a metal frame. Riq has ten pairs of small cymbals (6 cm), mounted in five pairs of slits. The translucent head is made of fish or goat skin, but also nowadays , a synthetic material.

We can hear riq in Egyptian, Syrian, Iraqi and Sudanese music. Depending on the country, this instrument can be a little bit bigger or smaller, but it always has high sound of jingles, and a lower sound of a skin membrane.
